The National Agricultural Areas Reserve (RAN) is a set of area which are the best soils for agricultural use. It is important to preserve the agricultural areas linking them the water cyclic, the carbon cycle and the landscape. The RAN rules have been essential to preserve the most important soils for agriculture.
The legislation on RAN has suffered several changes, being the latest one: Decreto-Lei n.º 73/2009, 31st March, with changes of the Decreto-Lei nº 199/2015, de 16 de setembro.
